I felt bad about admitting I hated Caillou. I mean, he’s just a little kid, inexplicably bald-headed — and a cartoon character.
But when PBS announced the long-running children’s show had been canceled, and I wrote about how happy that made me, other parents rejoiced, too.
“I hated Caillou too — he was so annoying,” Mary Beth Miller Orson wrote. Alia Rau simply cheered: “Yaaas!” Other parents said things I can’t print, though Caillou would get away with it because his suspiciously calm parents (I suspected Xanax) never held their whiny son accountable for his bad behavior.
Amazing how a cartoon character can inspire such venom in adults. But when your kids are little, you watch what they watch. Some shows seemed designed to torment us.
