Retired chemistry teacher takes on cartooning after father worked for Disney animations

ASHLAND, Ore. -- Artist, Kevin Culhane worked as a chemistry teacher at Crater High school for 12 years and Rogue Community College for 16 years.

Culhane decide to retire in Spring of 2020 during the outbreak of Covid-19.

"It was very tough because we switched everything to Zoom," said Culhane. "And that was not how I was hoping to end my career."

The artist started dabbling in drawing from a young age during school.

"Always had cartoons around the edges or in the really boring classes," said Culhane. "The entire page would be cartoons. So I think it just was something I did naturally. And my dad encouraged it because he found them really funny and he enjoyed it."

His father, Shamus Culhane worked in animation for Disney in the 1930s. He worked on projects such as Betty-Boop, Popeye, Casper The Friendly Ghost, Pinocchio and the 7 Dwarfs in Snow White. Kevin believes he discovered his passion for drawing from working with his father.
