Joyner adds more positions to his bingo card: Running back and new dad

They knew the answer before they asked.

Their only hesitation was actually asking.

Dakereron Joyner doesn’t owe South Carolina football anything. Not after five seasons, numerous position changes and star performances. Not after turning down a sheaf of offers to transfer and stand out elsewhere, particularly after his MVP performance in the 2021 Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

He’s heading into his sixth year, long past earning his undergraduate degree, and if anyone deserves a year to enjoy the limelight, it’s Joyner. He could be the best receiver/kick returner/Wildcat quarterback he could be in a routine learned through years of repetition, and have his off-the-field hours devoted to his newborn daughter Kahlani Noelle.

The Gamecocks’ coaches didn’t want to mess with that. But they knew they had a problem, and Joyner could help, and if they did ask, he’d say yes.

So they asked, citing the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the one. “Do you want to help out at running back?”
