Gradey Dick wins family bragging rights with big performance in win over Iowa State

Saturday’s contest marked KU’s first meeting against the Iowa State Cyclones this season, and freshman Gradey Dick’s first matchup against his mother’s alma mater. When asked about the layout of his family group chat in the week leading up to the game, Dick said it was full of memes sent back and forth.

Dick’s mother, Carmen (Jaspers), is originally from Ackley, Iowa and was a center for Iowa State from 1986-1989. She’s second all-time on ISU’s career field goal percentage list (.619), a member of ISU’s 1,000 point club (1,097) and was named the Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year in 1989. On Feb. 13, 1988, she shot a flawless 15-of-15 from the free throw line against the Jayhawks, which is an ISU single-game record.

However, after KU’s thrilling 62-60 win over Iowa State on Saturday, all bragging rights belong to Dick for now.
