Gabriela Hearst, the eco-conscious designer and former model, was raised in Uruguay on the sheep-and-cattle ranch she has since inherited and uses to source wool. She got her start with the brand Candela, making silk-screened T-shirts in Brooklyn before expanding into ready-to-wear and shoes. In 2015, she launched her eponymous luxury label and, in December 2020, she was appointed creative director of Chloé.
Lately, Hearst is lending her profile to nuclear fusion energy—a potentially game-changing power source that doesn’t emit carbon, and the reason she’s not giving up on humankind just yet.
