Appropriate, Messy, Affordable: How ‘Abbott Elementary’ Nails Teacher Style

Not long after the sitcom “Abbott Elementary” premiered on ABC, Quinta Brunson, the Emmy-winning show’s creator and star, tweeted about some feedback she had gotten on her new TV show.

“Seeing a lot of Janine outfit slander,” she wrote.

She was talking about Janine Teagues, the upbeat young teacher she plays on the show, after Janine’s outfit from the second episode (white patterned blouse with a two-toned orange skirt and perfectly sensible—but admittedly ugly—cream loafers) was met with a wave of mockery online. With her mishmash of brightly colored cardigans, long skirts, oversize sweaters and loud prints, Janine’s outfits are frequently the butt of jokes at the Philadelphia public school where she works.
