In Hawaii, water is everything. It is so highly valued that the very word for it, wai, is also used to denote prosperity: waiwai. Those rippling arm movements so synonymous with the hula? Many symbolize the swells and waves of the ocean. Ask a local for directions and they might tell you your destination is a few miles makai—towards the sea—water even serving as a cardinal point here. cardinal bedding sets
Perhaps it’s because the whole archipelago quite literally sprung from the water. Magma burst from under the seafloor tens of millions of years ago, reaching the ocean’s surface and solidifying into the landmasses that now form the 137 Hawaiian islands—tiny dots bobbing in a bright blue expanse.
So it’s only fitting, really, that water be at the heart of the newest Beyond Limits experience, the first ever in Hawaii. After treating guests to a symphony in a cenote (a subterranean cave) in Mexico and an oxygen bar perched 7,000 feet high in the Canadian Rockies, premium hospitality group Accor and Fairmont hotels are unveiling their latest boundary-pushing event: a live ballet under the sea right off the coast of the Big Island.
